Zimmer Biomet’s RibFix Advantage Intrathoracic Rib Fixation Earns EU Nod

Zimmer Biomet has received CE mark certification for RibFix Advantage, an intrathoracic rib fixation system. It’s the first technology of its kind to earn EU approval.

The intrathoracic rib fixation system launched in the U.S. in 2019.

RibFix Advantage is meant for thorascopic fixation, stabilization, and fusion of rib fractures. It allows for a minimally invasive approach compared to traditional open reduction internal fixation, with potential for less soft tissue disruption.

The device adapts to the ribs’ anatomy during tightening and auto-contours to reduce the fracture. The system and surgical technique could be an innovative advancement in rib fracture management.

The minimally invasive fixation system is made of pre-assembled bridge plates with locking posts and locking caps for thoracoscopically assisted fixation and stabilization of ribs. The pre-contoured bridge plate doesn’t need intra-operative bending and scalloped edges provide additional points of stability to the bone.

RibFix Advantage is brought into position on the intrathoracic aspect of the rib via cable guides. The pulling motion of the cables allows reduction of displaced fractures that have entered the thoracic cavity via compression.
